Is there any historical basis for the Leviathan to be the guardian of Atlantis?

I was watching the Disney movie "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" and was wondering whether the part where Milo and his crew battle the Leviathan (which is guarding the gate to Atlantis had any historical basis. Are there any records that relate the Leviathan to the city of Atlantis?
